Masterplanning three key recreational reserves within Tauranga
12 October 2022
Boffa Miskell is contributing to simultaneous redevelopment of three key recreational areas to deliver functional outcomes for a wide range of users including local residents, community sports and events, semi-professional sports, through to professional sport and commercial events.
Blake Park, Baypark, and the conjoined Tauranga and Wharepai Domains (Tauranga Domain Precinct) are three key areas of open space within Tauranga. It is critical that each of these parks work together, and with the rest of the open space network for Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. For this reason, master plans have been developed at the same time for each site. This enables network-wide optimisation as key assets can be relocated between sites to assist in delivering the most functional community, sports, events and leisure outcomes for both residents and visitors.
Boffa Miskell provided Planning, Cultural Advisory, Landscape Planning, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design through the feasibility and concept stages; and working closely with our recreational partners (Visitor Solutions and RSL) produced masterplans and 3D imagery for consultation and sign-off with Council.
We provided initial consultation, master planning and concept plans to establish issues, complexities, and options for the open space development. We further supported RSL and Visitor Solutions to provide high level feedback to the current masterplan options, develop a landscape concept plan with 3D aerial image of favoured option, and produce a masterplan report, combining the outputs of the project and notes around site legibility, landscape architecture, materials and character.
Part of the project was investigating the inclusion of a stadium as part of a feasibility study prior to looking at the location of key sports across the three active reserves. Engagement with tangata whenua and key stakeholders formed part of the feasibility study and respective master plans.
