Can busy city streets be transformed into vibrant, green and liveable avenues?
Hobson and Nelson Streets are home to the densest residential community in New Zealand. They are also some of the most traffic-dominated streets in Auckland, acting as virtual extensions of the motorway network bringing high volumes of traffic in and out of the city centre.
The Boffa Miskell design team explored ways to redress this imbalance when Auckland Council called for design ideas to demonstrate the potential for dramatic change on city centre streets to deliver the vision of the City Centre Masterplan. The design anticipates Hobson and Nelson Streets being transformed into broad green tree-lined avenues with room for a linear park space supporting more vibrant and active public life on the street, making a real contribution to the Mayor’s Vision of Auckland becoming the world’s most liveable city.
