Kaiapoi Streetscapes – Earthquake Recovery

Enhancing streetscapes in the restoration of earthquake-damaged neighbourhoods

Boffa Miskell assisted the Waimakariri District Council with its earthquake recovery programme by providing urban and landscape design input into the restoration of damaged streets in some residential neighbourhoods in Kaiapoi. The team was involved in consultation with local residents to explore options for how their roads could be rebuilt and be made more attractive and safe. Achieving enhanced streetscapes through good urban and landscape design has involved consideration of:

  • Streets as ‘Places’
  • Road widths appropriate for low-speed residential areas
  • Better pedestrian and cycle routes and crossings
  • Walking and cycling linkages
  • Enhancements through landscape treatment
  • Interaction between streets and parks

The project formed part of the wider recovery being undertaken by the Council which took top honours in the New Zealand Engineering Excellence in Community Engagement category, 2012.
