Councils and communities working together
The Community Planning Programme supports communities to develop a shared vision for their villages. It provides a mechanism for collaboration between communities, council and other agencies to implement improvements. This aligns with council’s vision of a connected, vibrant and thriving Manawatu – the best rural lifestyle in New Zealand.
The programme goal is to create attractive and prosperous communities that offer lifestyle choices and business opportunities within a unique environment. Current residents benefit from improved environment and services, and the village is made more attractive to new residents. In this way, villages are more sustainable.
Boffa Miskell has been engaged to assist Manawatu District Council and its communities by project managing their Community Planning Programme. The first eight projects from the Community Planning Programme include Halcombe, Sanson, Kimbolton, Apiti, Rangiwahia, Pohangina, Rongotea and Himatangi Beach.
The process involves growing a shared vision that comes from a good cross section of the community. A list of actions and projects are established to help deliver the vision. This is compiled in a comprehensive document that the community submits to Council for consideration.
