Building flexible and nature-based playspaces, with community involvement
The Auckland Kindergarten Association’s Orākei Kindergarten is located on Coates Ave, Orākei across the road from the local primary school and nearby Ngāti Whātua Orākei marae. The existing children’s outdoor area included beautiful mature pohutukawa and other large trees that provided lots of natural shade and character.
Boffa Miskell was engaged to redevelop the outdoor area and provide a more flexible and nature-based playspace that embraced the existing trees and allowed children to flow effortlessly between the different play experiences across the sloping site.
Improving the kindergarten entry to be more welcoming to children and whanau was of key importance and local carvers from Ngāti Whātua Orākei designed and built a colourful waharoa to complement the widened entry court flanked by lush, edible and sensory gardens.
A much-loved water feature was renovated and extended and given pride of place in a new nature play area under a gnarled pohutukawa tree with a feature wharenui.
New lawns, flexible set-up play area, bike track, sandpit and water play area, along with seating and improved storage for the teaching staff completed the rejuvenated outdoor spaces.
An orchard has now been established alongside the edible gardens, so the children can experience the seasonal changes and delights of growing and eating a wide range of fruit and vegetables.
Completed concept and detailed design, contract documentation and technical supervision through implementation.
