How integrating residents’ needs for independence with those of the community have underpinned the masterplanning of a new retirement village
Russley Retirement Village is a 3.3 hectare, staged development, elderly person’s complex. Boffa Miskell was engaged in 2007 to provide masterplanning and urban design services including a series of guiding design principles.
The layout of buildings, circulation routes and gardens has been organised to optimise site utilisation, and to provide variety, spaciousness and a sequence of interesting views. Ownership of common and private spaces is clearly signalled and there is no apparent wasted or “left over space”.
Since resource consent was granted in 2008, Boffa Miskell has undertaken the design, documentation and supervision of the landscape works, revised the masterplan to accommodate post-earthquake purchaser preferences for lower-rise apartment buildings, and assisted in obtaining the revised consent. The investors and the developers are very satisfied with sales and with the positive comments they are hearing from both residents and visitors.
