Achieving positive environmental outcomes for a gold mining operation

Waihi, New Zealand’s ‘Heart of Gold’, has a history of over 100 years of mining of gold and silver.

Boffa Miskell’s landscape planners were engaged to provide advice for the extension of the existing open pit mining within Martha Mine, which would increase the overall footprint of the Martha Pit by approximately 2.4 hectares.

The assessment confirmed the extended pit would continue to remain visually well-contained and largely consistent with the visual effects already occurring. Boffa Miskell presented evidence on behalf of the client and the project was granted consent in 2019.

Boffa Miskell's long-standing involvement with the Waihi Gold project involves on-going mine design and assessment work in Waihi including mitigation and rehabilitation following mine closure.

Boffa Miskell has been engaged to offer advice on several matters, including extending the existing Martha pit; a private plan change to expand the Mineral Zone; and applications to consent establishing the Waihi North mine.

The Waihi North Project involves the establishment of underground infrastructure beneath an Outstanding Natural Landscape within part of the Coromandel Forest Park. Boffa Miskell ecologists are undertaking surveys and assessments related to the proposal.
