About Derek

Derek is a public realm and urban transport specialist working as an urban designer on citywide development projects in the public and private sectors. Derek joined Boffa Miskell in late 2019 and brings individual expertise in planning and designing customer-centric, street-based outcomes across all touchpoints of public and active transport networks.  From land use integration and accessible transit services to place shaped outcomes for communities, neighbourhoods and all types of urban environments. He is passionate about transformative mobility improving the wellbeing and liveability of people, improving health, protecting environments and climate stability.  Derek is currently working on several urban transport projects in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, on Regional Spatial Planning Frameworks, along with a range of town centre ‘refresh’ projects in and around the Lower North Island.

Before working for Boffa Miskell, Derek worked as a senior consultant advising clients on a wide range of property investment and development projects living in Brisbane, Queensland.  He worked as an international specialist for commercial, philanthropic transport planning and design practices where he was involved in the preparation of project definition strategies, building development guidelines and detail design information. Also, Derek was the Master Architect for the South East Queensland Busway and Public Transport Network as part of the Queensland Governments investment in $2.4B infrastructure programme from 1996-2012. Derek is very active as an Urban Designer interfacing project sponsors, asset owners, customers and operators, to anticipate and manage change.
