Tauranga-based landscape architect Rebecca Ryder recently attended the IDBF World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand.
After returning to the sport from a 20-year break — if competitive waka ama can be considered ‘a break’ — Rebecca came away with 1x Gold and 2 x Silver medals as part of the Senior A (Master 40s) grade.
Rebecca says, “Paddling in both Premier and Senior A Women’s grade, the competition was tough; Canada, the USA, Thailand and Australia each had a strong team. The New Zealand contingent was a smaller group compared to other countries, so it was great to get the result on the podium.”
Fresh off her success in Pattaya, and ready for a new challenge, Rebecca is hoping to reinstate a lapsed Boffa Miskell tradition.
“Over the years, the Auckland and Tauranga offices have competed against one another at corporate Dragon Boat events, and there’s one on Lake Rotoroa in November. I’ve laid down the gauntlet to the Auckland office — we’ll see you in Hamilton!”
