Bioluminescence wins a Resene Colour Award

22 November 2021

Bioluminescence, one of the finalists in the inaugural Nohonga Design Competition, has been recognised with a 2021 Resene Colour Award.

Designed by graduate landscape architects Anna Li and Topsy Steele, Bioluminescence incorporates design elements reflecting the coastal landscape and the shape of shells found there.

In their citation, the judges said:

“Whether viewed from inside or out, the palette of this creatively imaginative nohonga harnesses the natural phenomenon of glowing luminously and irresistibly. The colour rhythmically ascends over the classical architectural framework drawing you deeper into the spiral and encouraging you to sit, linger and enjoy being surrounded in the beauty. The work is graceful and dynamic, but still breathes.”

Bringing Bioluminescence to reality was not without challenges. The scale of the design, and the weight of the curved concrete seating element proved difficult to achieve without the contribution of Streetscape and Jagas.

Currently sited at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail in Matakana, Bioluminescence will soon move to the Tauranga Waterfront as part of the on-going upgrade and activation of the space.
