Expanding learning and play opportunities across a whole school site
Takanini Primary School is in a phase of continuous innovation, as the school looks to build on the best of its long history and diverse community to create a fantastic indoor/outdoor learning environment to challenge and develop confident, competent and resilient 21st century learners.
Following on from the design and re-development of the Junior Play-based Learning area, Boffa Miskell was engaged to advance a long-term masterplan that would guide the school in its aspirations for outdoor teaching, learning and play. The school layout is a mix of courtyards and accessways around permanent and pre-fab buildings, all fenced off from the playing fields and gardens for security. We were asked to create a connected open space play network that worked with existing and future building positions, play areas and garden spaces, along with proposing gathering and social spaces for both small groups of students and larger events that reflect the cultural identities of the wider community.
At the same time the masterplan process was beginning, an earlier Bikes in Schools project was coming to fruition, with a new asphalt bike track due to be constructed within days. We were able to successfully influence the bike track layout to flex around the proposed new buildings in the masterplan, as well as link in the existing concrete paths for easy access. The bike track now also functions as a running/walking track for PE, plus makes teacher supervision a breeze during lunchtime, with a connected all-weather path right around the school field.
We undertook site walkovers with the Principal and senior staff, assimilated a wide range of aspirations into a draft concept for whole-school review. Feedback was integrated into a final guidance document; with projects the school can now undertake as and when funds are available over the next few years.
Children, teachers and the Board of Trustees all contributed through the masterplan process, with the final document reflecting a wide-ranging spatial arrangement of ideas and projects from new shade trees and picnic tables through to a re-developed junior playground. Consideration was given to design interventions that are low cost, low maintenance and robust for a busy school.
