The redevelopment of a small outdoor area to support opportunities for flexible learning
A waharoa welcomes children as they arrive at this kindergarten. The divided site is small but flat, with the children’s outdoor area positioned at the rear. Staff recognised that the site functioned poorly for children playing because their ability to move freely from one activity to the next was hindered.
The client wanted to be able to use the entire site more freely for children’s play; however, a divided play space would be difficult to supervise.
Boffa Miskell consultants developed the masterplan in association with the teachers, the community and Kindergarten Association. The resulting design reflects the inputs of the diverse community and provides opportunities for a range of learning activities.
