Breathing fresh life into a well-loved community kindergarten
Auckland Kindergarten Association engaged Boffa Miskell to refresh and reimagine the children’s outdoor area at Greenhithe Kindergarten. The kindergarten sits on a residential site in old Greenhithe, across the road from the primary school and was noted for its beautiful trees and lovingly cared-for gardens.
However, the shade from the now mature trees and the constant patter of small feet meant the lawn often resembled a patchwork of grass and mud, rather than an inviting space to play. An old and much-loved fort structure was also past its use-by date and needed removing to open up the space for more flexible play options.
We worked with the Head Teacher and her staff to understand how they wanted to use the space for their play-based learning programme, including retaining the easy flow from the covered porch to the existing sandpit.
A new waterplay area was designed, with sparkly pebbles and water channels that could be dammed with sand to create temporary ponds and moats. The swings were relocated and an outdoor kitchen, ‘secret circle’ play space and vegetable beds integrated with new native planting along the fenceline.
Artificial turf was laid across the majority of the site, flowing seamlessly into the lush gardens and new nature trail under the trees. Soft shock pads under the artificial turf means the entire space can be used for flexible play and mobile climbing equipment. The kindergarten’s beautiful mosaic tiles were re-laid in the adventure trail, creating a link between the old play garden and the new outdoor area
