Learning through play in a school environment

The teachers and children had a big wish-list including an adventure trail through lush native planting, flexible set-up play area for boxes and planks, sensory path, a special spot for imaginative play, stories and quiet reflection, vegetable planters and butterfly garden and something exciting to climb. An existing sandpit was not very exciting, so an interactive water play area was requested, along with a boat for lots of make-believe adventures!
We worked with the Principal and teaching team to consolidate the wish list into some key ‘must-haves’ and then developed a concept design that allowed for multiple play and learning activities to be happening simultaneously around the site, whilst retaining a spacious and open outlook across a lush semi-circular lawn.
The children now have a wonderful play garden to explore, with bespoke timber balance climber, wharenui, adventure trail, productive gardens, mud pit and ‘treasure island’ sand and water play area. Bees and butterflies flit through the colourful flowers, while the mosaic pavers of native birds have sparked lots of painting, story-telling and enquiry learning for the children and teachers.
