Westgate Town Square Design

What is a town centre without a civic heart?

Auckland Council is partnering with New Zealand Retail Property Group (NZRPG) to create a civic heart to the new Westgate Town Centre featuring a 3500 square metre library fronting onto a new town square. In June 2010 a team, led by Warren & Mahoney Architects and Boffa Miskell, was commissioned by Auckland Council to design the new library and town square.

The town square will act as the heart of the town centre, creating a unique identity and sense of place, and catering for a wide range of activities and users. It takes the concept of Shared Space, as recently introduced into the Auckland city centre by Auckland Council and Boffa Miskell, and applies it to deliver a ‘people first’ design to serve as a focal point for the surrounding retail development.
