A new urban village will provide green linkages and open spaces for the wider community.

The Carrington Development is a large-scale urban development on land acquired from Unitec Institute of Technology. The project is being delivered by the Marutūāhu, Ngāti Whātua and Waiohua-Tāmaki Rōpū and facilitated by the Crown via Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Boffa Miskell provided design expertise through several phases of strategic policy development — including landscape planning, masterplanning and landscape design for the streetscape, streamworks and open spaces. Our designers and ecologists have contributed to implementation of the stream daylighting connection to Te Auaunga and the streetscape currently under construction.

The site will have a network of high-quality open space with extensive native plantings that expand the habitat of Te Auaunga. Stormwater management will be supported by a range of green infrastructure including swales, planted channels and the Wairaka Stream daylighting.

The reference plan for the site seeks to recognise the cultural significance of the Wairaka Stream. The source of the stream is located within the Unitec campus and passes through the Carrington site, connecting to Te Auaunga. The design celebrates water, improves ecological outcomes, restores habitat, provides quality pedestrian linkages and establishes open space to support the future residential community.

More than the delivery of enabling infrastructure, the first stage of the project is an opportunity to demonstrate the vision and value for the Carrington Development. This will be achieved by creating public realm and placemaking opportunities, including four new open spaces. The design encapsulates the Carrington development principles, illustrating the unique character and spirit of this place for the nearby community and future residents.
