Can an appropriate streetscape harmonise people and traffic, create a vibrant area, support local business and attract investment?
In 2008 we were commissioned as lead design consultant to upgrade Elliott and Darby Streets as part of a 10 year programme of city centre street and open space upgrades.
The project was identified as being appropriate for the application of shared space design – a design approach that seeks to change the way streets operate by reducing the dominance of vehicles, primarily through lowering speeds and encouraging drivers to behave more accommodatingly towards pedestrians.
