Can an appropriate streetscape harmonise people and traffic, create a vibrant area, support local business and attract investment?

In 2008 we were commissioned as lead design consultant to upgrade Elliott and Darby Streets as part of a 10 year programme of city centre street and open space upgrades.

The project was identified as being appropriate for the application of shared space design – a design approach that seeks to change the way streets operate by reducing the dominance of vehicles, primarily through lowering speeds and encouraging drivers to behave more accommodatingly towards pedestrians.

The use of shared space was considered to be the most appropriate streetscape typology to meet the over-arching project objectives, which were to create more space for pedestrians to move around, sit and relax; create more space for outdoor activities, such as outdoor dining, events and gatherings; increase the flexibility of the street environment so that it can be used for a diverse range of activities; traffic calming and reduction, whilst still retaining vehicular access; create attractive destinations for people to visit, spend time and shop; and deliver vibrant street areas that support local businesses and attract investment.
