A space that is integral to school life, within the heart of the school.

When Freeman’s Bay Primary School constructed a new classroom block, the School Board of Trustees approached Boffa Miskell to look at an area that would become a courtyard in the heart of the school.

We worked closely with the Board of Trustees and the staff to develop a concept that met the needs of the school; a large deck for multiple uses (including outdoor assembly and sitting during the lunchtime eating period), space to play, a sandpit, and planter boxes which would be planted by the children.

When the concept was completed, we developed a staging proposal to implement the works over and extended period of time due to the limited budget. As the courtyard was opened up and came to life, the Principal and Board recognised the importance of the space and managed their budgets to allow greater development of the area.

Our role: Concept development, developed and detail design and site observation of implementation.
