The biggest challenge faced was creating a connection from existing built forms to new, a challenge that included not only the visible built form and spaces, but also a complex network of existing underground utilities and services at different levels. Melding these elements was achieved by adapting to and embracing some existing elements from the campus whilst allowing new elements for the innovation centre to be introduced into the landscape.

The landscape design approach embraced the Innovation Centre as the new civic heart of the Albany Campus, showcasing and supporting community learning. Using specific space typologies and pathways to link the campus to the Civic Heart the design creates a forward-looking landscape that binds existing and new built forms into a coherent, connected, and interactive community of innovation and learning.

The design team produced a well-considered concept for the site, and then work in collaboration with engineers, architects, client and contractors to produce BIM models that would allow for a fully rounded project that could carry through all the way to end of the construction of the project.

The project team also contributed time and expertise into planning material types and a unique planting design that reflect the local character as well as the international community it hosts.

Massey University was supportive of allowing the landscape to provide a consistent and unifying element throughout the site linking into the campus. The design provided a positive outcome for the university and created spaces for innovation and collaboration while introducing new to old in a seamless transition.
