Integrating landscape and urban design with highway development.

Boffa Miskell assisted Waka Kotahi | NZTA in producing a set of landscape and urban design guidelines.

To maximise the benefits of landscape and urban design at the outset of a project, the updated publications provide guidance for Waka Kotahi and their consultants, covering aspects such as policy framework and principles, scoping studies for route alignments, urban design and landscape assessments. This project demonstrates the commitment of Waka Kotahi | NZTA to environmental and socially responsible outcomes within the development of New Zealand’s transport network.

‘Bridging the Gap: NZTA Urban Design Guidelines’ and the ‘Landscape Guidelines’ were produced with visually engaging graphics that highlight the role of urban design and landscape architecture in the delivery of quality state highway projects. Our landscape architects also prepared ‘NZTA P39 Standard Specification for Highway Landscape Treatments’ which is an appendix within the Landscape Guidelines.

These practical, user-friendly publications contain high-level policy framework and principles under which Waka Kotahi operate. The documents are intended to build on and replace the 2006 version of ‘The Guidelines for Highway Landscaping’ and other urban design-related material previously used by Waka Kotahi .
